Day Sailing Tours from Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands

"Aura" is a beautiful 1948 wooden sloop, with a cockpit that will seat six. A typical San Juan Islands day sailing trip, for AURA on a nice windy day, starts in Deer Harbor on Orcas Island and continues through the Wasp Islands, across San Juan Channel to San Juan Island, back across the Channel and around Jones Island, then around Crane Island and through Pole Pass and back to Deer Harbor. Seals are often seen, sometimes porpoises, ospreys and eagles, whales hardly ever. Passengers can bring whatever they want to eat and drink. Sailing instruction is included. Steering the boat and handling the ropes is a big part of the experience, but if you just want to relax and enjoy the view you can. We highly recommend you stay overnight at one of the many fine lodgings available on Orcas Island, to give you more time to explore its wonders. With a group tour, there is a chance there will be other passengers on the boat, unless your party is 5 or 6 people. Captain Ward Fay is looking forward to sharing his love of sailing with you.

Classic Sailboat Racing on Two International One Design Sailboats, Two skippers, Limited Availability

Split your group into two parts for some friendly competition on two fast, beautiful and nearly identical International One Design racing sailboats from the 1930’s. Race with a diverse fleet in the weekly Orcas Island Yacht Club West Sound Regattas, or match-race the IOD’s in the Deer Harbor area. Sail in protected waters in the scenic heart of the San Juan Islands. Steer and adjust sails as much as you want, within the skipper’s supervision. This is a more involved and less leisurely sailboat ride. No experience is necessary, but those with sailboat racing experience are in for a real treat. Photo opportunities abound. The skippers are sailing instructors, and will do all they can to keep you out of trouble, and ahead of the other boat, in that order. Life Jackets are included. Facilities onboard are minimal. Bring your own refreshments. Maximum four passengers per boat. About a four-hour trip.
